First Indian Origin Miss America!

Miss New York, Nina Davuluri has become the first contestant of Indian origin to win the Miss America pageant. She was born in New York to Indian immigrants parents from Andhra Pradesh.

Her win had barely been announced when angry tweets calling her 'Arab', 'terrorist', 'foreigner' 'Miss Al Qaida' etc were posted. Some Americans expressed embarrassment at display of such racism.

Indians also took to twitter to say 'Americans can be the racist they are but should at least get their geography right'!

Addressing a Press Conference later, the newly crowned Miss America said, she considered herself foremost an American.

Indians all across the globe are ecstatic on this victory. While both top two finalists were Asian Americans, Nina remarked that they were making history as Asian Americans!

21st Century Satyagraha

The just released movie Satyagraha, has been directed by noted film director Prakash Jha. The movie stars  Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgan and Kareena Kapoor.

This movie it is widely claimed, is inspired by the India against Corruption movement led by Anna Hazare and Arvind Kejriwal. 

The movie portrays the uprising of ordinary citizens against a corrupt and powerful government indifferent to the pain of the common man, who is getting crushed under oppression.  It takes us back to August, 2011 when the whole nation had come out on the streets of India. The public demanded that the government should make a strong law against corruption; the Jan Lokpal Bill.  

Although many aspects of the story and the characters have been changed, it is very clear that this fiction borrows heavily from events that transpired in real time.

This film resonates the message of people's power and the need to rise and fight back against injustice and oppression, using Mahatma Gandhi’s method of ‘Satyagraha’ or nonviolent resistance. 

The movie ends with the message that the fight would now have to be fought from within the system.

Acclaimed social activist Anna Hazare is currently on a US tour. He not just led the Indian Independence Day parade in New York City this month but also visited many other places in the US.

Anna, who is a former soldier in the Indian Army is well-known and respected for his Gandhian ideals and is now synonymous with rural development and anti-corruption movement in India.

While in New York City, Anna also rang the opening bell at the Nasdaq stock exchange.

Though Anna did not interact much with the media, he created awareness on his stand on anti-corruption drive in India and a strong commitment to see through the implementation of the Lokpal bill in the country.

Indians in the US who have always been actively interested in the political activities in India, reaffirmed their support for the anti-corruption drive in the nation and to contribute to it with whatever means that they can.

When being asked how people can help Anna in his mission, he said that the NRIs should spread the message of anti-corruption movement on social networks and by aiding the movement with technological support that they have access to while being in the US.

Giving a glimpse of his own philosophy, Anna said, 'I have zero bank balance. I live in a temple. All that I have is one small room, a bed and a plate. I am 75 years old, have no high blood pressure, or diabetes or anything else. I never married, so instead of a family of four, a billion plus Indians are my family!'
